When I send an iMessage using the Messages app to one person, it instantly says Not Delivered. Even after selecting Try Again, it instantly fails. All my messages sync fine between my phone and computer and I can send iMessages to all of my other message threads without issue. I have signed out of iMessage on both my Mac and iPhone and signed back in as well as restarted both devices and the error still persists.

Has anyone encountered this and know how it can be resolved? It's irritating to have to grab my phone to message only one person back.

I've been having also sorts of Message "not delivered" issues with Big Sur on my M1 MacMini. Usually sending to several people at the same time. I'll be interested to see where this thread goes.

I should probably call Apple for some tech. support. I'll update if I get any assistance I can share.

what about at their end? have them text you, and see if that shows up... and see if you can then respond.

They text me and I see all of their messages come up on my Mac and on my iPhone, read status updates in real time. It's no issue. The only other thing I can think of is deleting the conversation but then I lose the whole conversation on my devices which I would really prefer not to do. Nor should I have to.

but when you reply, it does not go thru? they're not in the 'blocked' list in preferences by any chance?

whatever it is, surely your phone is always nearby, so at least you have a workaround. but hope you sort it out

Right. It instantly says not delivered for them only, as if iMessage isn't set up. But then if I context click the message and select Send as SMS, that too fails. I can send a message a minute before or after to another contact and the message goes through fine so it's some sort of hiccup or corruption that has occurred I think.

They are not on my blocked list. And yeah, my phone is nearby so it's not a huge issue but it is a pain to have to grab my phone to respond to one individual when I can read their messages on my screen and respond to everybody else :p

you sure the problem is not on their end, then? or perhaps it's something between your carrier and theirs...
It's possible but I've been regularly communicating with them and then it suddenly stopped working. But iMessages don't go through the carrier so that shouldn't be affected. And if iMessages weren't working, surely regular SMS would. The other thing is that remember iMessage and SMS via the iPhone are fine, it's only the computer where it doesn't work. And on the computer it instantly says Not Delivered so it's as if it doesn't even try to send.

if it were me (and it's not), i'd delete their contact info (copy it to a stickie or textedit first), and delete the conversation. then i'd reboot, make a new contact with their info... and send a text.

still, if that doesn't fix it, you've lost your conversation. anyway, am out of ideas; hopefully someone else here will step in & help.
