Messages / iMessage problems

Hi guys,

Wasn't quite sure where to post this at the moment. Technically this is an issue on iMessage but becomes apparent on iOS6 and Mountain Lion.

I am currently running iOS6 beta, and Mountain Lion Preview 4. (iPhone 4S, MacBook Pro Late 2011).

I have iMessage set up on the phone as follows:
'You can be reached by iMessage at:'
'+4475XXXXXXXX'
'nick@xxxxxx.org.uk'

'Start New Conversations From:'
'+4475XXXXXXXX'

This has worked fine.

I have now added my iMessage account to Messages on Mountain Lion - it is unable to add my UK phone number as a "Receive iMessages at" entry.

This means, the advertised feature that you can start a conversation on the iPhone and continue it on the Mac simply does not work. The conversations do not appear.

If I start a new conversation with someone via Messages, I appear as a duplicate entry in their Messages app on the iPhone with a new conversation, but appear in the same conversation as before on the iPhone. (iPhone only sees one, merged copy of the two conversations). The Mac only sees the messages sent directly to the email address. Whoever I'm messaging doesn't know which message entry to use!

Is this how it works at the moment in this beta? Can anyone else confirm?

I am having the same issue, it is not letting me choose my phone number. So I have the same problem of multiple threads/conversations per contact depending on where it originated.

i am also wondering how to add phone numbers to iMessages on Mountain Lion. As it added itself to my iPad.

It's hard to tell from the keynote but are we even supposed to be able to link messages on mac to our phone number? It would seem complicated to implement sending messages from the mac as being sent from the number.

Not complicated at all. Your messages would probably be synced with iCloud, therefore you can send iMessage via Phone Number on any of your iOS devices and Mac platforms.

this makes no sense because my wifi ipad does it, the iMessage system is completely on Apple's servers so it would be easy to impliment since the number itself is just an identifier on the server, just like an email is, no different.

Just found this recent Cult of Mac post that explains that iOS 6 will fix this problem & allow for unified apple account/phone number. Maybe we just have to wait until the official release of Mountain Lion to have this take effect for us?

yes but it only works on iOS devices, my iPad is using my phone number now. But my macbook isnt an iOS device, its a Mac OS X device.

This is my concern as well. I understand that iOS will be linked to the phone number now, which essentially only really affects the iPad/iPods but when it comes to messages on the mac, I don't see how iOS 6 changes anything.

Wasn't this feature supposed to be enabled by registering your phone number with an Apple ID.

I'd have expected that to either not be available till they release changes to the ID management page or to only be able to be done on an iPhone as a proof of phone number.

I was able to add a phone number to my iPad on b1... But to answer your question, I'm still unable to get my phone number as a send or receive address for Messages ML. That's what I was worried about too but then I read this:
Per Scott Forstall:
“We’re unifying your phone number and your Apple ID, So if someone calls you on your phone number with a FaceTime call, you can answer the call on your iPad or even your Mac. And we’re doing the exact same thing with iMessage.”
