After downloading 11.4 on my iPhone X last week, I’ve been encountering a problem when receiving iMessages from my wife. Wondered if anyone could help!

The problem is: as soon as I receive a message from her, the message is immediately marked as ‘read’, meaning I don’t get notified in any way, and must manually check our conversation feed to see if I have any new messages. The issue seems isolated to her conversation feed.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Sharing/using same Apple ID? If so, most likely why: iCloud Messages. In essence, "same" person sent the message, so aware of it. There is a different thread where person is seeing this when they send a message from their personal phone to their work phone, both on same Apple ID.

This. If it is the case I would HIGHLY recommend having individual AppleID's. If you ever get more devices (Watch, iPads, etc) it becomes even more of a problem. Its also very risky security wise too, if one of your devices is compromise you both could suffer the consequences.

Apple has a lot of things in place to help aid people that benefit from sharing an ID like family sharing. Even the higher tiers of iCloud storage can be shared with the family.
