with SMS messages. I type something in the Text Message box... and then when I hit Return... the text I had just written disappears from the box but does NOT show up in the conversation box. Also... the little microphone to the right of the text box does not seem to work for either Messages or SMS.

The microphone doesn't work for me either. Must be a bug in the beta.
I'm not using iOS 8 so cannot confirm the text message issue.
I have the same issue with sms.
Strange thing is that when I installed Yosemite to a MacBook Air, and then to an iMac, it worked.
When I installed it on a third iMac it stopped working for every computer.
Even stranger is that I receive SMS messages to the computer - I am just unable to send any.

I'm having the same issue with not being able to send non-iMessage sms's via the Messages app. Funny thing is, it worked fine in the previous Yosemite beta builds.
