I have a Macbook Pro late 2011, and have been reading mixed things as to whether or not the handoff for SMS messages would work without bluetooth, some have said it works, others have said it doesn't work. Does anyone know if messages will work with a 2011 pro, or if I will have to upgrade the bluetooth in my mac?

Thanks!

Before the SMS feature was turned off by Apple, it was working with MPB 2011. Unless Apple changes the requirements, you will be able to send and receive messages on your MBP provided it is running Yosemite and you have also updated to iOS 8 on your other devices.

Until Yosemite Public Beta 2, SMS relay worked on my Handoff unsupported Macbook.

That is to say, my Mac does not meet the Bluetooth requirements for this feature.

It was previously announced that the SMS relay feature was pushed forward until October. (Another Apple fail, IMO, as releasing software that cannot provide the full set of promised features. I would have delayed iOS 8 release until Yosemite was up, and then the iOS 8.0.1 fiasco -- makes me wonder what's up with Apple's QA/QC).

What remains unclear is whether it would require a Bluetooth 4-supported Mac or not (I believe it wouldn't, since I was able to SMS-relay in the previous Public Beta).

Hope this helps.

BR,

Mark.
