I think I'm going mad but I could swear that I used to have a quick reply function in ML DP3 or DP4 at some point? When Messages was closed, I would get the notification for a new message and could quick reply directly from within the notification without opening Messages.app?

Is that feature still present or am I completely losing the plot?

You could click on the notification and opens the window straight to the contact/conversation in GM. Not sure if that's what you're referring to. Didn't use the DP so not sure how replies were handle in that version.

Nope, I'm thinking of the complete opposite - not having to open Messages.app at all but instead quick reply from within the notification.

I believe I read this in a recent post that somebody was able to click on the notification pop-up and respond directly from there. Haven't tested it myself though.

Yeah that doesn't work. If you click on the notification or the reply button (depending on how you setup notifications), it just opens the app and straight to the conversation. Now that you've mentioned it, I wish this was really an option, would really make notifications much more effective!
