Anyone else having this issue? I reset the SMC, checked and unchecked which accounts Messages syncs contacts with and neither helped.

Quick update. After several days of it running high, Messages seems to have settled down. It's been about 12 hours and I haven't seen it spike to the 50-6-% range since. Maybe some process was finally rectified?

Yeah, I noticed mine going crazy when the battery ran out quicker than usual and my fans were on. Messages was taking up 100% CPU doing ... nothing.

The only reason I'd left it open was because I have an issue that if I quit it a few seconds after using it, it hangs and has to be force quit. I've logged a Feedback but Apple reckons I'm the only one with this issue (i.e. they've not read it :)).

Keep an eye out for Chrome also. It was running poorly on Catalina until I updated Chrome to whatever release came out recently. It runs fine now.

It was probably the software update re-indexing the archive or uploading/matching against iCloud. Most software updates trigger CPU intensive tasks that may last a day or so after upgrading.
