So I just got Mountain Lion and while trying out the new Messages app I noticed it sends one message to both of our phones.

For example I text my friend, "Hey" and on my phone and my girlfriend's phone it will show a message to my friend saying Hey on the right side. When he responds we both see his reply. If either of us respond our reply shows up on both of our phones.

We are sharing 1 Apple ID for purchases and syncing our contacts via iCloud.

Is there any way to make it so we don't see each others messages, without making separate accounts?

Thanks

Me and the wife use the same AppleID for iTunes/app store but we have separate IDs on our devices. Google 'different appleID' for info on how to do it. This will solve your issues.

Short answer, you need separate accounts.

Welcome to the walled garden that is the App Store. You have to buy everything twice.

Nah, you don't have to buy everything twice. Apple lets you use separate iCloud accounts, which are free, whilst sharing an Apple ID and its purchased content across devices. You even get 5 GB of storage per iCloud account. It's a good deal and Apple really got this right.

I think I figured it out.

So basically for the App store on my iPhone I have my gmail account.
Then for iCloud I have an @me.com account.

My Mac and both iPhones still show up under Find My iPhone on icloud.com as they did before so hopefully it all works. I can't tell now since my gf is at work..but crossing my fingers.

On a side note, I don't like the 3 finger drag (I came from Snow Leopard), had to change it back under System Preferences>Accessibility>Mouse & Trackpad>Trackpad Options>Enable Dragging
..in case anyone else can't figure it out.

Create a new Apple ID for your friend. Then he/she can sign into iMessage with that ID and the store can stay on the other shared ID.

I'm doing this with my kids so I know it works.
