.....I must be missing something. I can't find anywhere how you tell if your friends are online on their computer with the new messages system.

Before messages, their names wouldn't be greyed out on the buddylist window, but now there is no buddylist window, so how can one tell? Am I just missing something?

That window is only available if you're using an AIM account, but not if you're only using your iMessages account.

My thoughts:
iMessage don't have statuses, so you won't have buddylist with iMessage account. Think about iMessage as an online-sms. You don't know the person status when you send an sms to him on mobile...
