Ok, this is probably a dumb question, but is text messaging (not iMessaging) counted against your data usage? I am asking, because both my husband and I have unlimited data plans, but we also have unlimited messaging added on our family plan. If messages are counted as part of the data usage, there really would be no point in paying $30 extra for family messaging...

No, I don't believe text messages are counted towards data usage.

No texts don't use your data allowance unless its an iMessage.

Cancel your SMS messaging plan and save $30 a month. For all your friends who do not have the iPhone make them all I stall heytell or whatapp. Why should we pay for these people!

Why should we pay for these people!

True true.

I have one friend who is still on iOS 4.3 (he bought his phone in March and has never plugged it into a computer to sync or back-up, iOS 5 was made for him), we text a lot with each other, but for some reason he refuses to update to iOS 5.

I told him that all of my friends and family members with iOS devices, including his wife (who is also my best friend) has updated to iOS 5 and all of our messages are now iMessages (free) and that I plan on canceling my texting plan soon, and if he doesn't upgrade to iOS 5, we will no longer be able to text.

I'm not going to keep paying $20 a month for texts because of one friend.

I just setup a new Google Gmail account and then a Goolge Voice number. I give the hold outs this new number and they can old school SMS me. It has push so I don't have to have the GoogleVoice iPhone app running to see the message from them. I'm still verifying this is the case but it seems to work so far.

The I'll put a SMS block on my number when everything is good.

I have a Google Voice number as well, and I already gave him that number.

I've had a GV number for over a year, and up to this point I have only used it for Voice, I'm just no sure if I want to manage two apps for texting.

Last night I was over his house and he was telling his wife "My old Verizon phone used to tell me when a message was delivered, read and when the person was replying back, I wish my iPhone can do that"

I said "With iOS 5, it can", then he goes, "Oh, I still don't want to update it"

lol, smack!

About the dual apps ... yeah you're texting inside of Google's view for all the hold outs ... on a Jailbroken phone it is merged into the same view, but I don't want to jailbreak. Something needs to be done, because in a world where everyone has a data plan, we need a common IM application as iMesssage is iPhone only. I have lots of friends on other phones so this Google Solution put them in this app as well.
