I can' seem to message anyone since upgrading to new iOS. A red by bubble comes up and tells me the addressee is not registered with iMessage. How do I message someone who has not upgraded or has a device other than an Apple device.

Just to clarify, iPads and iPods can only message other Apple devices running IOS5 using iMessage. If you really need to txt other people, you need to use an app like google voice or textfree; you can't use iMessage, as it cannot txt from non-iPhone devices.

So as far as messaging goes I kinda screwed myself as far as the messaging feature goes. Many of my contacts don't have iOS5 or an apple device!

Not really, Just download and use AIM. You can text cell phones. Or use one of the other services mentioned in this thread other than iMessage. iMessage is only for iOS 5 people (eventually Macs too is the rumor).

Thank everyone for their replies. I still don't understand the point of only being able to message ios5 users. My messaging worked quite well before upgrading.

How did you screw yourself? Previously you couldn't message anyone. Now you can message other iOS 5 users.
