Hi,
I don't know much about ports and what nots - i'm a mac newbie and a networking amateur.
I just moved into uni residency and messenger/adium isn't working on any of the macs but it is on all the pc's.
Some network guy just installed an IP telephone, i asked him if he knew why - he said it was something to do with the fact that messenger on PC uses port 80, but on a mac it uses a different port which isn't available at my residence. He said that its probably possible to reconfigure one of the programs to work via port 80?? And that i should get on some mac websites - so here i am!!

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Matt

Haven't tried it, but it seems you can set the port in Adium under preferences -> accounts -> edit <your account(s)> -> options. Try setting that to 80. Note that if the firewall is running on your Mac (System preferences -> Sharing), you might have to open the port for Adium.

My msn account is connected to messenger.hotmail.com on port 1863 while my icq account connects to login.oscar.aol.com on port 5190, as default by Adium (don't use MSN Messenger), and if those ports are closed on your university's network, then finding an open port might be your best option... :)
