actually, hfs has supported meta-data from day one. in the old mac os (and osx to a lesser extent) all files and applications were denoted by file and creator types stored within the file. this metadata typing meant that you could *gasp* have files without extensions because the programs could recognize them just from this hidden bit of information. i believe labels in classic were done in a similar way. with the filesystem in the beos (the guy who created the BFS is now working for apple) you could add as much metadata as you wanted, creating your own categories for whatever variables you would like, not just creator and file codes. hopefully this flexibility will make it into 10.3's filesystem.
