Metal SSD cover on the nMP

Regarding the blade SSD on the nMP, does the metal cover have any function? Is it a heat sink? Or is it designed to shield the nearby equipment? Or is it simply for aesthetic?

The reason why I ask is because some vendors are selling SSD replacements but without this cover. Will there be some long term issue if I were to install an uncovered blade into my system?

Is the cover on the stock blade removable?

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

it's for cooling due to its proximity to the core of the GPU. I guess
