Hello!

I have a client with a MacBook Pro 2.4, running Bootcamp with the latest drivers. He recently had a problem with his mic not working - a reinstall of the drivers fixed that (handled by another technician in our company).

However, now he's got a different problem - every time something is rested on the left hand side of the laptop (over the speaker grill), a horrible, piercing feedback whine is heard!

I've confirmed this is unique to the Windows side of things (it doesn't happen under Leopard), and after fiddling with the microphone settings, turning on the Mic Boost makes it much, much more sensitive (anything within a foot of the keyboard causes feedback). I'm guessing it's a driver issue, but the drivers are up to date, as provided by Apple, and a Google search turned up nothing similar.

Has anyone seen this before, or know of a fix?

Thank you!

Maybe not rest things on the keyboard? Or perhaps use headphones so as to break the feedback-loop. Otherwise you'll have to lower either the speaker levels or the mic input levels until the feedback goes away. Definitely not a driver issue, all mic/speaker setups are susceptible to feedback.

I can confirm it's not a driver issue because the problem did not occur until we updated his drivers in Windows, and it does not happen under Leopard.

As for "Don't rest things on the keyboard," simply putting your hand near the grill (while typing) or accidentally letting a paper drift too close to it emits a ear-piercing shriek. DEFINITELY not acceptable behavior for a laptop, and it was not happening before his drivers were updated.
