Coming from an 13'' M1 MBP I just ordered an 14'' M4 Pro MBP. For years I put a fine microfiber cloth on the keyboard of my 13'' MBP to protect the screen from key imprints. This worked just fine. The screen ist still pristine after alle these years of heavy use. Since I am not familiar with the new design MBPs I want to know if this is still a good idea or not? What's your experience on the new design MBPs? Still necessary or does it pose a threat to the screen? THX for your expertise.

I've owned my share of MBPs and the only model where keyboards marking the screen was a problem for me was the 2016 MBP. I'm currently on a 16" M1 Pro MBP and have no issues with keyboard markings on the screen. There is a little bit of spacing between the screen and the keyboard. The screen is recessed like about .3mm.

I have 16” M2 and I definitely see keyboard imprints on the screen every now and then. Not permanent damage of any sort, just like some residual oil makes it from the keyboard to the screen. The keyboard and screen must be touching each other a little bit, at least sometimes.

I’m not the only one who has noticed this — I looked for comments when I first saw it. I wish they’d find a way to recess the keyboard another half millimeter or something.

I don’t bother to put a cloth in between the keyboard and the screen. It takes a good while (weeks) to become noticeable and I just clean it off when it does.

Just got my new MBP today. Asked the guy at the Apple Store and recommended using a microfiber cloth on the keyboard while the Mac is closed to prevent damaging the screen.

And you think that some random guy from Apple Store can give you better advise ? These employees are mostly less informed than people visiting this forum.

Mostly? It's been my experience that Apple Store employees are only marginally more informed than a customer who has never owned a computer or smartphone in their life. That includes the Genius Bar workers, whos only benefit anymore is having the tools to crack open the devices and the BatPhone to call Cupertino engineers.
