With the economy tanking and the holidays looming, Microsoft is hoping to salvage some Zune sales by chopping prices.

The software maker plans to announce on Wednesday a price cut for its flash-based models. The 4GB version will drop to $99, the 8GB model will drop by $10 to $139, and the 16GB model will sell for $179, down from $199.

Actually, I think it will. I've tried the current Zune 16 GB and hardware-wise, it's actually a pretty nice unit with decent controls and reasonably long battery life. (Mind you, I'll still take an iPod nano because there are many more accessories available for the iPod than the Zune.)

Zune software for OS X that doesn't destroy my ID3 tags for what it thinks are better ones please.

I'm looking at Sony's 8 GB player for $119 right now. Drag and drop love plus tons of battery life.
