Since installing macOS Sonoma (23A344) Microsoft Excel 365 (23091703) doesn't use my Region setting (Netherlands) but instead uses the Primary Preferred Languages setting (English US).

I reinstalled Office 365, reinstalled macOS and Office 365. And replicated this problem on another Mac.

Anyone else facing this problem? Any solutions? Many thanks!

Hi Geert,

Same problem here!
MacOS Sonoma 14.0 (23A344)
MacBook Air M2, 2022
Excel 16.77.1 (23091703)

I use Preferred Language "English (US) - Primary" and region "Netherlands"
Changed the date format to YYYY-MM-DD
I expected in EXCEL the default date format to be YYYY-MM-DD or the region default DD/MM/YYYY but i get M/D/Y
I'm not amused!

Ruurd

Just tried something:

If i change region to "Caribbean Netherlands" it works for me :)
The date is now in the correct format!
The currency symbol is now $, but i never use currency symbol with cell formatting, i allways use the ISO code.

There's a number of hiccups in Microsoft Office / 365 reported on Sonoma so far. My first was that that bullets (or dot) would print as boxes, not correct symbol. Contacted Microsoft Support and there initial response was that the OS was still in Beta, and their people were still testing their apps on it. I pointed out that Sonoma was released to the public the day before, and essentially the response back was 'Oh'.

So clearly Microsoft has some catching up to do - I guess we add your issue to the mix.

It also works if you change language to English UK...

Yes, one of the risks of installing brand new releases :-(
We have to be patient and wait for the next Office updates to correct these problems...

I also shared this problem with Microsoft and shared a screenshot of my Language & Region settings. Let's hope for a quick resolution of this issue.

Did you download it from microsoft, purchaser it in the US from and authorized retailer or did a cheap version from an outlet like ebay?
Office is not based on regional settings but based on version. Even though you load it in the US it could very well be another regional version which overrides you computers regional settings. Just my experience

After updating to macOS Sonoma 14.1 (23B74) still no solution for this problem: Microsoft Excel 365 (23100802) doesn't use my Region setting (Netherlands) but instead uses the Primary Preferred Languages setting (English US).

Anyone else having a different experience?
