Since when did Apple have a multitouch notebook?

Apple has one... they just cant show it off because it isn't done.

they began developing the iPhone 2 years ago,
who knows when they began developing the multitouch notebook?

You're delusional

Apple, if they have one, hasn't shown it off. Microsoft has. They beat Apple to it. Deal with it.

To what? Showing off multi-touch in a possibly useful way, NO!

Using multi-touch badly on a semi-reasonable scale (remember the guy only used a portion of the screen), YES!

Its not such a win, and with the iPhone almost out the door, Apple certainly has something better than this (even if its just a bigger iPhone) in the labs...

Talk about the kettle! Microsoft Surface is not a laptop, it is a table. You don't carry it under your arm, you carry it in the back of a pickup truck.

is there?

M$ doesn't have a laptop, they have a screen size the size of the iPhone.

Give apple a few months, and we will see a multi-touch laptop, or iMac!
The difference is M$ tells people what they are working on, Apple does not!

You are obviously trying to be funny. Of course Apple wouldn't show it off, since they tend to secrecy.

This is not a product. It is a hack thrown together to demo technology, with no sense of style and a thrown together UI. Multitouch demos like this have been around for years. There's absolutely nothing innovative about this.

Completely disappointing from Microsoft. But that is nothing new...

I can't believe some people are considering this as Microsoft "beating" Apple. Sorry, but what is shown there is vastly LESS than what the iPhone does, and that is a real product that will be in real peoples hands in less than one week. Not to mention iPhone looks to be less than half the thickness of the hack job MS used on that screen, and a couple orders of magnitude more responsive than that demo, even though the iPhone hardware itself is many orders of magnitude below that of a laptop.

So MS have stuck infra red cameras inside coffee tables and on the back of a laptop screen.

What's the story?

I think it's quite exciting to see Microsoft actually trying to innovate even if it is by acquisitions (M$'s specialty), but at least the industry is moving in a great direction. I also think comparing the iPhone and this is pointless, since
1. both are not currently available to consumers (at least for a few more days!)
2. this is not Microsoft's final product, it's going to improve (gasp!)
so its not an A-A comparison.

Innovation drives the industry, all the innovation of the past few years has been, well quite boring (at least to my non-tech savy friends), but this , Seadragon and Photosynth (even though acquired) are exciting new technologies that have not gotten as much attention as our almight iPhone. We must be honest with ourselves about M$ and Apple, both do benefit from one another, competition drives innovation, innovation the industry.

But this laptop is honestly, quite lame. Soon Microsoft and Apple will both emerge from their RD departments with a MT that is not boring/lame, and it will be innovative. Sadly whoever releases first will dub the other "copying" but it isn't.

As a side note Northrop Grumman fanboys can say Microsoft is copying them b/c a similar technology is being developed (and has been for the last 2 years) by them for specifically for the military. btw, i've never heard anyone call themselves a NG fanboy.

It's pretty good. I would have never thought of Ir for a touchscreen, and not only can you touch it you can use a remote with it without have a visible sensor. Pretty cool if you ask me. Hopefully Apple does steal it. I doubt the iPhone uses Ir.

Apple has made no secret of how their touch technology works.
