iPad Microsoft Office on iPad Pro

Hi All,

So I’m able to use Microsoft office using my hotmail account on my iPhone as I have a office 2016 license. However, when I install office applications and login using my Microsoft account, it says it couldn’t find any subscriptions. What gives? How is this different than my iPhone?

Appreciate any guidance and I apologize if this is in the wrong forum.

Which iPad Pro do you have? Editing features are only free on devices 10.1” or less.

As JPack says, if you have a 10.5 or 12.9 iPad, you need to pay. More specifically, you need an Office 365 subscription as your 2016 license does not apply.

You might also want to try the web version of MS Office. (...at one time one needed an Office 365 subscription, I don't know if that is still true) I have an O365 subscription so I don't know if it is needed. At the very least, you'll need to create a free hotmail account.

The online version is far superior to the iOS version and looks and works wonderfully on the 12.9 Pro.

In fact, I actually prefer the iPad version to the desktop one. There are a few features I sometimes need that it doesn’t have, but for most of the time it is perfect. And my work as a lawyer involves serious use of Word to craft long documents. It is the main tool by which I earn my living.

It is a pity Microsoft are holding back features in IOS Microsoft word such as inserting table of contents, table of lists, linking in with referencing apps. It can insert these features but chooses not to. If it did these things I could dump my MacBook and go all in with iOS.

Bingo. Clearly the logic is in the code to be able to render those elements. But as much as I distrust Microsoft, I think they're withholding those capabilities for a purely technical reason. It is not possible to create a touch-optimized user interface in a way that presents all of the features available in a manner that is usable.

Yeah things get even worse when one collaborates with several others on a document with advanced formatting and styles applied within it. Cross platform sharing of such a document screws up formatting, even going PC to Mac can cause issues with some formatting features. Such a use case affects a small demographic of the user base but for a word processing software package that’s been around for a couple of decades it really shouldn’t be an issue IMO.

I'm still not sure if I should get an Office 365 subscription or just use Office Online, which I could use for free. Does anyone have a comparison or can tell me how well Office Online works on an IPad Pro 10.5? I would use it mainly for viewing and printing at school and for creating quite simple word documents. Unfortunately I don't have my IPad yet.

Office on iPad is good for basic use. I have used it to do things such as simple edits and reviews, but if your a heavy excel user and/or need to review or edit security laden documents, then its a nightmare. online version is workable, but on a touch interface its tougher. If only Apple would allow a mouse on iPad that would make things insanely easier ... Powerpoint is awesome on the iPad, I have created presentations with ease and best of all, formatting is consistent with the desktop version. When I travel, I always bring my MacBook, but typically only use my iPad as im not hammering out excel documents like crazy like I do in my office.

I find the Office apps are the best for my work. It kills me to have to pay annually, I REALLY wish Microsoft would alllow a one time purchase like they do Office for Mac. But they don’t, so just to throw this out there, you don’t need the full subscription for activating these apps, you get Office 365 Personal, hunt down a deal to get it for $50-69/year. If I find a really good deal, I typically purchase 2 so I only have to suck it up every other year.

Wow, this is really disappointing if true! You cannot 'buy once' and not renew when going for Office for iPad?

I don't mind purchasing once (for use on iPad and iMac) but don't wish to be forced to a) pay monthly or b) pay again for after 12 months for updates, I'm happy to use slightly out of date versions!

Yep, for 10" devices and larger this is true. I have a subscription and actually really like it as my wife and I have it on multiple devices and we both have 1TB on OneDrive.

I have actually found a lot of value to OneDrive. After linking it to the Files app, and having a designated Folder on my MacBook desktop that I regularly sync with another folder, it works as a nice option. Would still love a one time purchase option though.

I have been using Office 2008 on my Mac for the past 10 years and it really covered my needs pretty well. Recently I created some long word documents with a lot of images and although it worked, it was slow and crash-prone.

Just got a 2018 iPad and yesterday I got an Office 365 personal subscription for $70/year. Have only played around a bit, but it looks good so far on both my MacBook Air and iPad. I was reluctant to use anything in the cloud because the only internet connection I could get in my rural location was sub-megabit DSL for over 10 years. But last summer Verizon wired my little town for FIOS and I now have 150/150 service. So everything works well with OneDrive.

I think this will work out nicely for me, and $70/year doesn't seem unreasonable for what you get.

We keep most of our documentation at my company in a OneNote notebook and I also create my meeting notes in my own OneNote notebooks using my Apple Pencil. I'm not sure I would use Office if my company weren't paying the bill, but it's a great way for me to keep my personal notes siloed in one app (Notability) and my work notes siloed in another (OneNote).

I have noticed the same—it’s definitely a battery hog.
