Microsoft Office vs. iWork

I've heard briefly about iWork vs. Office in previous posts, though this isn't directly related to iMac's or mine being shipped now, I'm opening up the discussion.

Which is better?
In a world of Microsoft Word, how does iWork compare?
Are there any real performance issues with Office on Mac's? (from what I understand, Mac prides itself on running Office.)
