I doubt, it, but then again I haven't heard anything else. I think Mac Office gets updated on a three year cycle, which would mean that 2007 or so would be the next update. Not positive though. BTW, 2004 is a big improvement over X if you used it.

The scuttlebutt is that Office 12, which was only recently announced as an official product in the pipeline, will come out for Windows sometime in the middle of next year, and for Mac sometime after that. So if you can wait for approximately 12-16 months, then wait, otherwise....

Does Microsoft offer an upgrade price for Office? I'll most likely still be a student when Office 12, so upgrading won't be a problem, but if I was having to pay for the standard version, I'm not sure I'd upgrade unless there was a discounted upgrade price.

Generally there are reduced cost updarted on the retail versions.

You can't get a discounted upgrade price off of the student version in any case, only the retail version (that's part of the trade of for the low low price. That and not beiing permitted to resell the software when you;re done wid it.)

You can expect Office 2004 Student and Teachers to be updated at the same time as the other configurations. Unlike Standard and Professional, you cannot expect to upgrade Student and Teachers. You must buy a new copy. OTOH, there is no need to. If you copy of Office 2004 works for you, there will be no need to replace it. As for the update schedule, Microsoft tries to update Office on a two-year cycle with new Mac and Windows versions in alternate years. The Redmond Monopoly, however, does not always meet this schedule, however. There was no update in 2005. It appears that both Windows and the Mac will get new versions in 2006.

I have been so lucky in this department, my university pays for the licensing of these products so that they can distribute them to any and all students. I have literally gotten Microsoft Office X, 2001, 2004 for Mac/Win i can't keep track of what version was for what OS, Norton 9 for Mac/Win, Windoze 98-ME-2000-XP, Mac OSX .1,.2,.3,.4(They just started giving this to students) all for $0 USD. I graduate in December though so I won't be getting 10.5 or Windows Vesta.

Go for Office right now, because it's definitely an essential for any student to have. Besides, many of the "updates" to Office include the little paper clip guy telling you exactly how you should format that resume/ email/ suicide note.

Like? I haven't really used my Office version 10 since graduating but your post raised my curiousity.

Yeah, not so sure about that one myself either. I'd argue that a second hand copy of Office X will be a better buy - cheaper and almost exactly the same. :)

Oh, no... Office X and 2004 are worlds apart. Where X is buggy, ugly and a general pain in the butt, 2004 (after some updates) actually work, have had a facelift and feels almost Mac-like.

Go for Office 2004. If you considering X because of the price I would rather recommend one of the free Mac OS X ports of OpenOffice, e.g. the java port NeoOffice/J which is much more stable than Office X, IMO.

Okay, thanks for that. I haven't used 2004 very much admittedly. Thankfully I'm finding Office X very stable though. :)

Well, Office X is probably good enough but I've just had nothing but problems with it... :D

I also get some complaints from Mac users around me (who all call me when something's wrong ;)), and on example is that X doesn't work properly with the online clipart library, and lets say you select 10 different clipart images and then go to download, only 3-7 comes down. I've not had those problems with 2004 (though I've not used the feature extensively). :(

I never used Office X, but Office 2004 is superb. I use it daily for my business and I've never had a problem with it. Highly recommended and better than Office 2003 I use on WinTel.

If you qualify for educational discount, then at £99 (or $150 for you guys across the pond), it really is a no-brainer. There isn't any other package available that comes close - much as I would love NeoOffice to do so.

cheers
