I am not in school anymore so I am looking for a way to use MS OneNote. Anyone have it and what do you use it for? Seems pretty fancy software to sit on the sidelines.

I work in a computer lab, my main work area is separate from the racks where the servers sit.

I often need to perform console tasks which cannot be performed remotely, and OneNote is a great way to document my steps, scripts, or other helpful hints. i gather the info, document in OneNote, then go into the server room with my iPhone or iPad and have access to the notes.

Organizing stuff in OneNote by Section and Page makes it easy to find stuff. And the instant sync to all devices makes it quite useful. Apple Notes is similarly useful for the same reasons but I started using OneNote before Apple updated Notes.

OneNote is one of the best packages for keeping track of notes in an organized way. I use it both professionally and personally. Surprised you didn't use it for school as it's perfect for keeping class notes organized.

You can have several different notebooks. I choose to use two. One personal, one for work. Keep things organized by Section Groups, Sections and pages. For work, my Section Groups are something like Meetings, Projects and Vendors. Sections cover types of meetings, projects and companies. Then the pages are for subcategories like individuals or groups, contacts, parts of projects, etc. So they look something like this:

Meetings
Individuals
Dale
My topics
Discussions
Tina
My Topics
Discussions
Change Management
Date of meeting
Administration

Vendors
Acme
Contacts
Billing
Issues

Projects
Acquisitions
Company A
Details
Meetings
Email Migration
Team Members
Meetings
Current Setup
Future Setup

Makes it really easy to find things. If you can handwrite on your screen, it will recognize your writing and either convert it to text or search on it. My advice to you is use it, learn it, get good at it.

Just out of curiosity (I have not used the app), but what would you say makes the MS app more convenient than the standard Apple Note app? The dir structure can be had with Note as well (I have it that way to store my different topics and sub topics via folder hierarchy) and it works as expected. Are there some extra features in MS OneNote that make you prefer/recommend it over other apps?

OneNote (2016, the current Mac version) has been a decent app for note taking, however, since MS announced earlier this year that they won't be continuing to develop the app and start deprecating features that utilize sharing links starting next month, I'm looking for a replacement. I use the Windows and iOS ON app. I'm also on the "fast ring" for Mac Office updates - MS stopped pushing ON updates about a month ago whil. MS has offered that they'll be "supporting" ON 2016, but there will never be a desktop-based ON 2019 or beyond.

You'll likely need an Outlook.com account and its associated OneDrive, then DL OneNote from the MAS. MS has indicated they'll support the 2016 version until 2022, but no new features will be added (see the link below for more from MS on this and lots of griping in the hundreds of comments, interspersed by an MS moderator).

The "new" Win10-only (for now) OneNote pretty much sucks, is IMO about 20% of the 2016 version, and is cloud-based - the latter kills it for me with my small business for compliance reasons. MS has indicated it's moved to a common code base for its common Office apps (including iOS/Android) - I'm assuming that OneNote will follow suit later this year. I'm looking for a replacement...

MS is discontinuing OneNote for Mac? I find that hard to believe. Are you sure of this?

There are a LOT more features available in OneNote than the standard Apple Note app. Looks like I'll have to get with my Microsoft rep and inquire about the depreciation of OneNote.

His link bears this out. The statements in the link do suggest an alternative is eventually going to come.

This is a typical MS MO. They do it with back office servers too. Put something out there, then remove it and try to get you to adopt their new preferred solution, only to have that be pulled. They like to dabble in cross platform stuff, but tend to view it as a way to pull folks in to their other products. They have one this with every release of LCS\OCS\Lync telephony integration with 3rd Party PBX.

I suspect ON users will be OK, by the time support is pulled they should have something else.

In that case I guess its a good idea that the majority of my notes are stored in Apple Notes. I was looking for a reason to use OneNote as it seems more powerful but I will have to scratch that plan and will continue to use Apple Notes.

OneNote is a collaboration powerhouse. If you just want to take notes and keep grocery lists, OneNote is Overkill.

I'm a huge fan of OneNote for education, and will be doing a presentation on it in a few weeks. "District-wide Collaboration Using Microsoft OneNote."

If it offers something useful now, go ahead and use it. They will support its present form for a while. I would assume a migration path and Mac replacement before all features are removed.

Apple Notes is pretty decent in the latest form. But given the uncertainty of ON, if you have a lot of notes to migrate, ya stick to Apple until something else comes along.

But the Mac version will be discontinued soon.

I didn't write "MS is discontinuing OneNote for Mac" or even alluded to it. MS is discontinuing support of the desktop app for both Windows and macOS, and they've already discontinued development of both desktop apps (currently called Microsoft OneNote, generally associated with Office 2016 apps). And, I already offered backup - read that linked-to web blog post, it's from a member of the MS OneNote dev team, not some prognostication from some guy located some where. The desktop app's replacement has already been deployed, a bit over a month now, on Win10.

I'm a business owner, I get TechNet updates, I read the updates and that MS post. Don't believe me, believe MS - read that blog post. I've tried the new application, and it blows green, hairy chunks when compared to the current app. I've been informed that some of the current desktop app's background sharing functionality will be turned off on June 18 2018, and there's plenty of griping in that blog post's comment section about that very point. Both of my attorneys use OneNote for Business, and they're not happy about the changes either - and we've got less than a month to find a sharing workaround. Don't bug me about this as MS's position is linked-to above - sign on and post your opinion there.

They are pushing Office 365. There are already features that you can only access from 365. So you'll always be able to use it.
No, not true. FUD. OneNote has been independent of O365 to this point. The development of the desktop version of this app is over, dead, done with, baked - stick a fork in it, it's done. Prove me wrong? Stuff like this have been posted pretty much everywhere for over a month now. My personal use of OneNote is exactly the same as my work copy tied to O365, no difference whatsoever.

It was hard to find but I bought Office 2016 to avoid the subscription based service.
I'm pretty much done with this thread, Office 2016 is available at Staples, Amazon, Best Buy, MS and Apple Stores - and Office 2019 will be available in about 3 months with no upgrade path from Office 2016. Neither suite includes OneNote. Office 2019 is already in beta for business customers - I know, I'm one of them... Over, and out...

Does anyone know why they decided to quit with OneNote? I am assuming this is also the Mac version. It was a big deal when they created it for the Mac and now its dead? Why?

I think some are confused with what MS is doing here. MS is NOT killing OneNote (for Windows or Mac). They're just no longer making it available as a stand-alone desktop product. In other words, the only way to get/use it will be with Windows 10 or an Office 365 subscription with Office 2019 when it's released. Don't confuse the OneNote app with the OneNote service.

Okay - @campyguy has really started a mess here. OneNote is NOT going away. If you use the Windows OS, it will continue, though as a re-written program like what happens from time to time. See what Microsoft says about OneNote.

AND - MOST IMPORTANTLY for Apple Product users of OneNote for Mac:

What does this mean for OneNote for Mac?
This change only applies to Windows, where we have both OneNote 2016 and OneNote for Windows 10. Other versions of OneNote, including OneNote for Mac, OneNote for iPhone and iPad, OneNote for Android, and OneNote Online are unchanged. All of these versions will continue to receive updates every month with new features and improvements.

Hope this clarifies it for everyone here. @campyguy - next time, please get all the facts before getting everyone in an uproar.

Try creating a staff notebook without 365.
