I updated two computers to Sonoma and now bullets don't print in MS Word (latest version). Page preview shows them, print preview only shows an empty square. It's the same regardless of printer and computer. Is there a way to fix this?

Yup, the case here on M2 Mini > Sonoma > MS Office 2021 - Home & Business, too.
And in my case, JustinRP37, saving to PDF gets the same result - little boxes rather than bullets.

Saving it as pdf doesn't make a difference as in Bazza1's case. The only work-around is to paste the file into a Google Doc and save it as pdf there. I reported it in the feedback section of Word but who knows how long it will take MS and/or Apple to fix it.

Update: Another workaround is to create the document in Google Doc or use a bulletless file from Word there and add the bullets in Google Docs and save it as MS Word file in docx format. That one opens fine in MS Word and can print the bullets, go figure...

Just wrapped a Microsoft Support chat - info she had was -

"I just want to inform you that your OS is a latest version of Mac however it is not yet publicly released as it is still currently being tested out. This means that Microsoft is also still working with that device and still testing out the compatibility issues with the apps and programs that will run for that device. We currently don't have latest resources and tools for issues related to Sonoma devices as I said that it still being test out."

I advised her Sonoma was released publicly yesterday.

Let's just say it may be awhile before MS catches up...

Thanks, that doesn't sound very reassuring. I guess I will use Pages and Google Docs for some kinds of documents until MS learns that there is a new Mac operating system. :)

It might be the Symbol font that Word uses for the bullets. I was able to work around this within Word by redefining the bullet to be a bullet character from the Cambria font. It printed fine.

I use Pages exclusively for the last 10 years. No need for Word except for opening obtuse and rare docx files.. :) Sonoma is crap anyway, Word is even bigger crap.

Interesting, I tried Symbol and Arial but that didn't work. Do you have to create the Cambria bullet every time you reopen Word? It doesn't save the new bullet on my computer.

At work, I need to save some documents as Word docx file. If they are created in Pages, I have the occasional formatting issue in MS Word.

Amen to "not very encouraging", but thank you all. At least I now know that I did not do something to bring this upon myself.

Thank God I found this thread! I was going nuts about this issue. The workaround I found for now is just to convert the word file into PDF using PDF Expert directly from Finder (right click, open). The PDF version is as the original. But if I use the internal Word PDF printer or Acrobat, it doesn't work and bullets are squares.

If you're in the Current Channel (Preview) update cycle, MS just released some 16.78 updates. Maybe the issues got resolved?

I am having the exact same problem. Updated to Sonoma 14.0 and now all of my bullets in Microsoft Word are showing as empty boxes rather than bullets. Any news on a fix?

Hello, I recently switched from using a Windows Lenovo computer to a Mac Book Air M2 with IOS Ventura. The bullets in my MS word docs (originally created on the windows computer) will not print on my Mac MS Word software. I have to convert my doc to a PDF for it to print properly. Is there a setting I have to change in the MAC MS Word. I have tried redefining a new bullet, but it didn't work.

Yes, would love to hear about this too.

I noticed that advanced symbol +- and micro are all squares, if the document is printed or saved as pdf. I need to submit this document in pdf file in two days.

Look at the workarounds mentioned in this thread, try Pages or Google Docs and save it as pdf there.

Squares appear when the bullets are defined with the font "Symbol" (the default). You can redefine the font for the bullet in the dialog for list symbols and select e.g., Calibri. Then the bullets appear correctly in the PDF and on the printed sheet of paper.

I tried that and it didn't work for me.

Thanks, and fingers crossed. Did you have the issue before the 14.1 beta 2? I'm wondering whether it is a Sonoma problem and/or MS issue.

A little of (a) and (b) here, I think. Online Support text thread w/ Microsoft suggests the weren't ready for Sonoma to go consumer Gold. Still 'testing' on the developer betas they had. Meanwhile, its hard to imagine what Apple would have balled up to make a previously successful task fail.

I think MS should have been more on top of this. I have customers losing their mind over it right now, and the best I can tell them is that either Apple or MS or both will likely have a fix this month. After extensive googling on the matter, it looks like this sort of thing has happened a TON of times in years past..... all bugs that have to be squashed.
