Microsoft *has no* response to Apple. None is possible from a visonless company that rides the coattails of old and tired tech paradigms: Windows and Office. ZZzzz . . .

The only thing from MS are excuses. More and more of them on a quarterly basis.

As long as the current gang of idiots are managing MS, the company will continue to be the joke of the industry.

Is it me, or are all of Microsoft's products just so boring? They never seem to very inventive.

Just look at who's running the show.

MS has always been this way, anyway. Their entire business model is geared toward bargain-basement volume sales.

Windows Phone 7 is pretty inventive, according to the articles I've seen.

WP7 is unique. It's the only major mobile OS that isn't based around a 1980s style grid of individual app icons.

WP7 is based around activity and interest "hubs", which you open into "panoramas" that you can side scroll through. (Which finally and perfectly explains the cut-off headers people used to snicker at... now I see that they're a side scroll indicator for that hub.)

Here's a recent demo at a trade show:

WP7 will start hitting carriers in October, which is good timing since it's in the in-between months when iPhones aren't a hot topic.

That's looks a bit crap really
It's still really a grid of icons too, just bigger icons that take up most of the screen and scroll vertically instead of horizontally

In summary, meh

Microsoft got lazy and it hurt them - now they're actually trying. Xbox is getting more subscribers, their online services are now starting to approach the decency of Google's offerings and WP7 actually looks really good, instead of copying the iPhone like Android and everything else they've done something new.

So Microsoft's response to Apple's sales figures is to talk about how many phones Nokia are selling. Brilliant and inspired.

Sorry ? There is one number about nokia phones there.

Some interesting figures there. The xbox live figures are a real surprise for me (don't really follow them much). As is the projected figure of 439 million smart phone sales in 2014. If demand is anywhere near there then apple's inertia will have them sitting pretty.
