I participated in the offer and it was a bit of a disaster. The download software was buggy and kept quitting in the middle of my download, causing me to have to restart it multiple times, and eventually I gave up. Microsoft finally relented and just put up an ISO to download, so that's what I ended up doing. It was just way more complicated than it needed to be.

I think using Digital River was a mistake on Microsoft's part; their system is horrible; when you have that retrieve with email and last CC digits idea they never work. I can never find the score of orders I used the same email and CC for all of them. I can only find the very first one from like 5 years ago.

That said, I simply just downloaded a disk from a torrent site that matched the ISO of the official disk and then used the key I bought to install it.

IMO that is not that big of a problem.. sure it kind of sucks, but atleast they are offering refunds and a work around.

I think the snow leopard upgrade fiasco where it deletes all your files is much worse.

It sucked, luckily I found a workaround online, after trying for hours to download a file i needed I got the instructions for some command prompt magic and was on my way.

The hassle definately pissed me off though, I mean they are trying to redo their image on getting their act together. So they pick Digital River to distribute and not even make a simple ISO file? come on.

KnocK thurrott for other things, but he's been on Microsoft's case about this before it happened, whilst it happened and after it happened.
He provided in his blog workable work arounds, and whilst a little hackey, worked. The annoying thing is that they're not honouring the licenses as properly valid... It was annoying at the time, but it's better now - adecent google or twitter ask and you'll get the solution. the price of the upgrade (as a fresh install) wasn't too bad for a VM XP user.
