I've read over 10 reviews of the new Airpods Pro now. And incredibly enough not a single reviewer mentions anything about the sound quality produced by the mics when you're in a phone call or when you record yourself. This is the only thing I really care about to have improved from the old Airpods.

Have anyone tried the mics out, or read anything about them? I imagine I'm not the only one who cares about the quality of the mics on a headset...

It would be a scandal if the new Airpods, costing twice as much as the old ones, would have anything but "equal or better" mics.

The question is if they are better and in that case how much better.

The real question imo is how well the mic works on macOS. With current gen AirPods the audio becomes garbage when using them for both input and output.

I am curious about this as well. I have the Powerbeats pro and people on the other ends of calls always complain about how loud background noise is.

Might cancel my order...

"One early concern I have, though, is that when I called myself and left a voicemail I noticed that the call quality was pretty muffled, more so than I’m used to with my regular AirPods. A friend I called also noticed this."

I viewed many Airpod Pro reviews on Youtube, none tested the microphone voice quality. Are there any reviews on microphone quality and comparison with the previous generation Airpods?
Of course they didnt. They are all obsessed with getting their "review" up the fastest that they just regurgitate Apples marketing PR without actually testing the features out other than very simple stuff.

I too want to know....sound quality and mic quality compared to other in ear buds and the current standard Airpods.

..just watched that (it's here by the way, for anyone interested) - and I was really surprised how bad they sound!
😦

Did read they do sound a lot worse when connected to a Mac (compared to using them with your iPhone) due to different algorythms / codecs being used - can anyone confirm this?

I had the AirPods 2 and now own the AirPods Pro. No one has complained to me about sound quality. I tested it myself and its not bad. Not super stereo quality but its good.

The real question imo is how well the mic works on macOS. With current gen AirPods the audio becomes garbage when using them for both input and output.
That’s an issue of either or both devices not having Bluetooth 5, which provides the bandwidth necessary for higher-quality audio in and out simultaneously. If one or both devices has Bluetooth 4.2 or earlier, then it’ll fall back to lower bandwidth because it has to.

The Apple devices that may be causing the problem:
  • AirPods (1st generation)
  • All iMacs except iMac Pro
  • 2014 Mac mini and earlier
  • 2013 Mac Pro and earlier
  • 2018 MacBook Air
  • 2017 MacBook Pro and earlier
  • All MacBooks
  • 10.2” iPad
  • Other iPads (and iPad Pros) released before November 2018
  • iPhone 7 and earlier
  • Apple Watch Series 3 and earlier
