The PowerBook actually has a semi-decent microphone built-in.
If he is looking for a better one these are some pretty good desktop options:

Unless the cable that connects the guitar to the Mac has some additional electronics included, electric guitar piped into a Mac mic jack is gonna sound cr@ptacular.

i'm in the market for a good quality versatil Mic. So far i'm going with the Shure SM 57, i've read, heard that it's a great Mic, you can record guitar, bass, drums, and good vocal quality recording with it. Of course i'm getting that Mic because i'm a newbie, and i can't afford an expensive mic, so this one for Now will let me record different instruments. As soon as i can i'll try to buy a Shure SM 58 for vocals only.
Any suggestions? i can't spend more than 100 bucks on a mic right now so that's why the SM57 looks like the perfect Mic. Any other suggestion?

First and foremost, buy a decent preamp.
If you are on a budget, look at this thing. http://www.mackie.com/products/spike/
The Spike also comes with Traction, which will get you going producing your podcasts. It also has built in DI so it's good if you use guitar with built in mics or electric.
If you have more money, look into their Onyx 800R. Mackie make some very good preamps for the money.
A decent mic for your application. Humm, hard one. SM57 wouldn't really wouldn't look at. Try a condeser mic such as Shure's SM87A, or perhaps some of the Sennheiser mics.
Monster are ok, but not the best out there. They seem to be a bit more priced than other brands. Use balanced cables where possible, you can them get away with lower cost cables.

oh, i'm getting a preamp for sure....i'll be getting a M-Audio 410 Firewire interface.

where have you used them opusthe2nd? i've heard great things about the SM58's too but for different uses (vocals, instruments) i've heard the SM57's are better and for Vocal only the SM58's are better, i personally can't proove this because i haven't used either of them, but i'm still looking for options, i'll be buying a good all around mic in January, so i need to pick a good one. Under 100 bucks

We have a southern gospel quartet and we used them some. But now that I think of it. Someone wanted us to try these: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/R21/ and you know, the sound was pretty good. This is for vocals we used them. Mind you, they are an SM58 knock off. Only thing I didnt like was they didnt feel as nice in your hand, plus they had hand noise if you fiddled with them. We used them quite a bit and will keep using them.

I've got the Logitech too. Works fine for me just for simple audio recording and internet telephony.
