Mid 2010 iMac and how to get hi res sound to speakers for excellent music

Hi. I am new to this so not sure what works. But I have a mid 2010 27" iMac and now use Tidal streaming for hi res 24bit 96khz music. I want to improve speaker output (headphones already in use). Will this old model deliver? Do I need a USB DAC and/or high quality bookshelf active loudspeakers such as Quad 1s or KEF LSX? I don't want to waste money but want the best I can get. Robin
