Gang I have a problem that is really difficult to search just due to accidentally in-useful terms.... This is a Mid-2010 13" MacBook Pro running MacOS Sierra 10.12.6, Intel Core 2 Duo, otherwise seemingly healthy. "Out of the blue" the WIFI stopped working, and is showing WIFI: Hardware Not Installed. That message, and problem, seem to be fairly common, but the recommended fixes I have read so far produce nothing. I ran a file system check and it came up clean. One would think that this is surely a real hardware issue but I doubt that; here's why. I do a lot of work on mac's and PC's and have USB wifi devices that I use that I know are good, friendly, well-supported, so I installed one of those using the proper installer for this version. The software install went smoothly, the device is installed right, but it never "shows up" - that is, there is no association with the WIFI indication on the home screen, but when I check Network, the device is there, healthy, with all the expected info.

Something is preventing/blocking WIFI. What? Where do I go from here? I suppose it could be a malware that is being partially hindered but is blocking a WIFI related service?

EDIT: Ethernet works fine.

All/any tips greatly appreciated!

Have you tried a pram and smc reset?
yes I have.
I'm beginning to think the TL-WN722N that I installed is not compatible after all, though it had a smooth install with their provided software and shows up in the hardware list looking apparently healthy. everything else I do with both USB ports looks ok.... but what else could it be?
