Mid 2010 MBP

I've been debating on upgrading to El Capitan. I have a mid 2010 13 inch MBP. Would the upgrade be worth it, or would the computer become slower?

What OS are you running now? El Capitan is faster than Yosemite. I personally wouldn't update without a backup. Do some research in the forums and find others with your machine to see their experiences. You may want to start here:

I'm on the exact same machine.

Really happy with it so far. Feels faster, lighter, and more responsive. Have not had many issues (still very early of course) but it feels much better than Yosemite or Mavericks. Was nervous it would grind my system to a slog, but it's done the opposite! Feeling more like 10.6 or 10.8.

Very happy.

I'd be really interested to know how you got on so please do update us. I'm on a mid 2010 15inch MBP and considering the same upgrade but Mavericks has been very snappy for me so far and I'd rather keep speed above all else.

Just upgraded my 2010 2.66GHz dual i7 with 8GB RAM and it's working perfectly so far.

Base model 13 inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pro. I've been running El Capitan since the betas and its been much faster than Yosemite. Hope that helps.

Just finished the upgrade yesterday. It runs much faster than Yosemite! I've been working in Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator all morning. These things used to really slow down to a near halt. For the age of the computer, it's really worth the upgrade.

Glad to hear it is working well for you! Pretty impressed with it so far, especially considering I'm on an older machine.

One other note, the battery life is much better. I replaced the battery a year and a half ago myself with a cheap version from eBay (I know, you get what you pay for). I went from about an hour when I originally installed Mavericks to a few hours of battery life on El Capitan.

Not quite as impressed after the xx.1 update.
Not sure what is causing it but doesn't feel as light or snappy as the initial upgrade. Have had more beachballs in Safari and things like Spotify/iTunes or playing vids on Quicktime. Seems like most people are doing well so trying to pinpoint what is going on. How has everyone else been getting on?

El Capitan worked well, but just after making this I bought the new MacBook. I'm loving it.

Thanks - thats odd. I wonder what they changed. Suspect xx.2 will be out before the end of the month so hopefully it will correct itself. Keep us posted!

Mine is either on par or faster than mavericks. Adobe Cs6 and Office use.

I do have transparencies disabled however. (since it doesnt play too nice with Displaylink)

Ok...I freed up a bit more space and it appears to be running a bit smoother. More like the the first version, which was superb for me. Could that be the case? I have about 23gig free now. I need to free up more anyway.

I'll keep playing around with it, I don't have iTunes/Spotify opened...just Safari, which is feeling better today??? Hard to tell but I haven't been getting many beachballs at all, and it does feel a bit better. Still trying to work it out.

i have the base mid-2010 13" MBP C2D. bought it second hand and came preinstalled w/ Yosemite. upgraded the internals to 8gb RAM and an Crucial BX100 256gb SSD, night and day performance difference after both upgrades. currently running 10.11.1 El Capitan with no issues.
