Mid 2011 iMac - TDM with bad video card

I have a mid 2011 iMac with a bad video card. This is the second card that has failed and I don't want to waste $ replacing it again. (The first one died 4 months after the "extended warranty coverage, second one died 7 months later).

So I am now working off my 17" MBP hooked to a 21" monitor. But I miss my big 27" and was wondering if there was any way to connect my MBP to the iMac and use its display.

I can't use TDM because I can't boot it up to place it in TDM.

Any suggestions?
