So, I am considering getting a used MBP 15" (the DVD/Optical drive, and 3.5 audio in port still appeal to me).
Is it reasonable to think that it will be supported for OS updates for several more years?
It's little brother the 13" is still being sold, so following that logic the 13" and 15" should qualify for OS updates for 6 more years, right?

Apple will drop support when they want for a vast variety of reasons. I expect it'll be fine for 3-4 more years but I wouldn't bet on any more than that.

There's two reasons a drop in support for the 2012 Classic 15" is highly unlikely:
  1. They are still, as of today, selling the 13" 2012 MacBook Pro Classic as a new model. So they are still supporting the same ports, processor generation (Ivy Bridge), the same integrated GPU at the very least.
  2. The hardware is almost exactly the same as the 2012 Retina, with the exception of better thermals for the GPU and a faster GPU clock rate. So the support should be the same as a 2012 Retina. Given the 2009 white MacBook series is still running Sierra quite well, I'd say, at the very least, you have until 2020 before things start to slow down.
So really, it's a great machine. Thinking of picking one up myself (because it can be upgraded to 16GB of DDR3 and a 512 or 1tb SSD).
