Hi, Forum

My friend's mid-2014 13" rMBP (128GB/8GB/i5) won't turn on after the battery died.

  • On connecting the MagSafe, the light glows green and then turns to amber, as is normal.
  • SMC reset works properly, with the magsafe light turning green and then back to amber.
  • Tried two different chargers, no difference.
  • Tried disconnecting the battery internally and powering on, no luck.
  • No response from the laptop, fans don't start up, no power on USB.
Any clue on what it could be? It's unlikely that it's the power circuit, because the MagSafe LED is working properly. The keyboard is working too since SMC reset can be performed easily. What could be the issue?

With symptoms that severe, it unfortunately rather sounds like some sort of logic board issue.

I assume you have also connected the battery internally again after disconnecting it (you didn't mention)?

That's what the genius bar came up with. They tried a hard SMC reset (with the battery disconnected), which I had already tried. Funnily enough, the laptop started up once at the Apple store. It showed 4% battery and died shortly after. Never started up again. My friend has decided to just call in his best buy warranty.

Good thing he had purchased the warranty. I wish all laptops come with 3 years of warranty. It should be standard considering how much are paying for them.

Indeed. I never believed in paying extra for warranty. I just fixed any issues that came up. But then again, older Macs have always been more repairable. With new retina MacBooks, extended warranty is almost a must have.

He should move to the UK.

Defective products are covered up to 6 years under UK Consumer Protection laws.
