My mid 2014 13" macbook pro (retina) has been acting really weird. Two days ago after I powered it up, the mouse started going crazy, moving all over the place, and eventually stopped moving, and my trackpad hasn't worked ever since. I'm using an USB mouse works flawlessly.

My keyboard is also strange ever since, often not registering my key presses. After searching several forums, I found some users who reported this happening when their battery started swelling, but my trackpad still clicks fairly normally, which didn't happen in some of the cases I've seen. My battery is infact in 'Replace Soon' condition, with 1200 cycles. I've posted a screenshot of CoconutBattery bellow.

Already tried SMC and PRAM reset, without success.

I've ruled out sending it to Apple, since they charge me 300€ because they have to replace the entire bottom frame.
I'm thinking about ordering a battery from iFixit. Do you think this might fix my issue? Do I also need to replace the trackpad/keyboard cable?

Any experience regarding similar situations is highly appreciated.

I doubt its the battery, you should check out the hardware forums to see if they have ideas on how to troubleshoot your trackpad.

I had similar symptoms of trackpad failing then keyboard eventually failing. I bought a replacement trackpad contraption from eBay for about 30 bucks more in hope. Amazingly it worked and has done for about 18 months. I’m still on the original battery.

It could be that your battery is starting to expand and that pressure is causing your trackpad issues. The trackpad is covered by the battery and will cause it to have issues if there is a battery problem.

Have you tried taking it in to Apple to have your battery serviced? When they replace the battery on a retina MBP, I believe that they replace the whole topcase as the battery is glued onto it. The topcase includes the keyboard and trackpad. If not then they do give you a 90day warranty after out of warranty service.

According to the various Apple EU websites, battery service for a 13 inch retina MBP is 209€.

https://support.apple.com/mac/repair/service
That is the USA website, but just click the country link at the bottom to switch to your own country in the EU.

You can do it yourself although the retina models the battery is glued it, so it is difficult to take out especially if you've never done it before.
