middle spec with upgrade to ssd seems like the sweet spot for me...any gotchas on this spec ?

8gb ram would be fine

Depending on what you ask it to do, it can be 70-80% slower than the model it replaces. That's a huge gotcha.

nobody loves the new mini ?

what about thunderbolt 2, iris graphics, better wifi...

that's the config I just ordered. going to use it for ios development and banking. my PC will be my main workhorse so these specs should be enough for the next couple of years.

thought about getting 16 GB for better resale value, but I doubt paying apple $200 now for the RAM is gonna let me sell it for $200 more later.

That's the one I just got. Mid tier 2014 mac mini with 256 gb flash. Here is the speed of that pcie flash. I'm guessing this is the sammy model:

People are bent out of shape about the drop of the quad cores and the soldered RAM. Many are so short sighted in those items that they can not see the forest for the trees.....

What is reallllyyy sad is how much time they spend on these forums responding to ALL 2014 threads. Get a life. Get some fresh air. Chill. Clearly there is a market for what Apple is selling based on people who are interested in them on these forums.

Get over it and move on. Being pissed off about something you have no control over is sad. Try to find the good in life instead of the negative.

Get this one. It's a steal. It has not one, but two cores. Just like the iPhone 6.

Thank you for the response I have been trying to formulate. Thank you.

I was looking at the mid model as well. I just couldn't belive the price with 256 ssd on the education store still came out to 900. If it were 699 with the ssd I would probably go for. I think I'll wait for refurbs to start showing up.

so, if you buy new mini with only spinning 5400 rpm drive,is there a free pcie slot?

Yes and no. The plug is available on the logic board and the drive carrier has the screw standoff but the cable is not there and nobody has yet found a part number for just the cable. I can see a part number for the entire drive carrier including the cable, I have to wonder if it's that way because there's something molded into the carrier to secure the PCIe end of the drive.
