New York (not NYC)
On Appleinsider, it claims that a gigantic Apple store is to be built in midtown manhattan. Does anyone know where i could find more info on this bc i am going to NYC soon and would like to know if the store will be open by then. I imagine very soon because the construction according to the site began in Febuary.

Yup they are building a *very* large store in the former GM building around 60th and 5th Ave. It's across the street from the Plaza Hotel.

There is no official opening date, but I have seen various comments about it being open for the holiday season. This is a huge retail space in a very high traffic area .... I am sure that Apple wants it open in time for holiday shopping.

I've already promised to take my daughter to the grand opening...

On the basis of location alone, this should surpass Apple's Soho store in terms of numbers of visitors and overall importance in NYC. It would be great for it to open in December, but many major projects run into delays ... I'd hoping to go there for holiday shopping myself. There will be plenty of promotion from Apple when it nears completion.

GM Plaza (aka Mid-Town, Fifth Avenue) - New York City - The New York Post reported in early 2004 that Apple negotiated a 21,000 square-foot space in the underground concourse of the GM Building as a second Manhattan retail store. The GM Building is at 767 Fifth Ave., between 58th and 59th St. in Manhattan, right at the corner of Central Park. It's sorta mid-Manhattan, while the SoHo store is near the southern tip of the island. A Jan. 2005 AppleInsider story says work on this project should begin soon. Construction barricade went up the last week of Feb. 2005. In March 2005 The New York Times said the store will feature a circular glass staircase from the ground-level plaza to the lower-level store [like the Osaka staircase]. Other sources confirm the ground level entrance will be enclosed by a 32-foot glass cube with multi-facted glass blocks, recalling the the I.M. Pei-designed glass pyramid over the tourist entrance to the Louvre (Paris) museum. Appeared as job location on April 10, 2005. During the 2005 4th quarter conference call, CFO Peter Oppenheimer responded to a question, saying this store would be open "in fiscal 2006." [photo] [NY Times] [Oct. 28 report]

Regent Street - London, England - Nov. 20 - street-level, high-profile. Occupies 20,000 square-feet plus 3,000 back-of-house, 75-feet wide on two floors mid-block in a new mixed retail-office development owned by the Queen's Estate at 229-247 Regent Street. Read my complete report on the building and its construction. On Oct. 26th Apple announced the Nov. 20th grand opening. Within two months, became the second-highest grossing store in Apple's retail chain. [store calendar]

I still have to imagine they lose money on a storefront like that. It seems that the image of the store is more desirable than the actual sales made there.

Isn't having one in Midtown and one in SoHo a little overkill? Maybe I think that cuz I'm not a New Yorker.

It will take quite some time before it is known whether it proves to be profitable, but so much marketing analysis precedes the decisions to build another major flagship that I will assume for now that it will pay off.

There is a decent distance between the Soho location on Prince Street and the midtown spot, and the high density of workers and residents will make the new locale a source of steady traffic especially from many out-of-town visitors who stay in hotels in midtown. As a lifelong resident of a crowded NYC, I think Apple can justify two such stores within approx. 4 miles of one another.

I concur, the demographics of the two areas are *very* different. In the past year a large "Manhattan style" upscale mall has opened directly west of the new Apple site on the other side of Central Park. When it was being planned there was tons of concern over whether it would be successful--and it has done very, very well. The GM site is on the southern edge of Central Park -- a very high traffic area all year long. The tourist angle will be a major contributor midtown, part of Apple's successful strategy is that "pull to buy" that seems to waft through their stores ---if the store becomes a destination in itself, then it should do well.

It's a little tough to fathom if you haven't spent some time in the city, but those can be 4 long miles to travel if you just want to visit an Apple Store. The proposed store that didn't make a lot of sense was the one in the Flatiron. But who knows, Apple has pulled it off before.

I'm certainly looking forward to checking it out.

FAO Schwartz is in the same building; so there's already a huge tourist attraction there. It is catty-corner to Central Park at the principal location for getting a carriage ride. It is half a block from Mickey Mantle's on Central Park South. Its about 2 blocks up Fifth Avenue from Trump's building where he fires people on the Apprentice. I think it will do just fine. It is a LONG way from the store in the Village.

Man, why aren't they building a huge new one closer to L.A.? I never get a chance to fly out to New York :(

Oh well, this new store sounds amazing. I'll definitely have to take a look at it next time I'm out there.

I hope that the Midtown Apple Store is easier to get to than the SoHo one on the train... I had quite an adventure trying to find it. :D

The Prince Street station is two stops from my office in lower Manhattan, making it easy for me to stop there for a bit after work. The first time going to the Soho location I had a problem finding it, too. I actually went up to a postal worker and he said I was within several blocks. Then he sent me off in a direction that left me more than double the distance from the store. Go USPS!

The storefront is just a big glass cube in the middle of a courtyard. You go into the cub and down a (spiral?) glass staircase or a round elevator into the store beneath it. The store is huge underground, although half of it is going to be set aside for storage and offices.

Crazy isn't it? I just want them to open one in Brooklyn, SoHo is kind of a pain to get to from where I'm at. Then again maybe it's better that way, less temptation to get new toys. :p
