Anyone done this yet? Is it prety seemless Between sprint and verizion who do you recommend? I'm thinking of getting one and would like others opinions on it.

Mifi with a wifi only iPad.

Considering using a Verizon MiFi when I travel the states on vacation.
Yep. I've done it ... In the UK
Bought a wifi iPad and then paid £50 for a Three PAYG MIFI unit and it's brilliant.
Don't intend to use it much hence the reason for not paying an extra £100 for a 3G iPad.
Location Services also seems pretty accurate considering mine doesn't have a GPS chip in it.

The Sprint Overdrive has both 3G and 4G radios. I believe that there is 5GB soft cap when using it on Sprint's 3G network and if you're using it in a 4G area then it's unlimited.
I hear it has really poor battery life and overheats like crazy compared to the Verizon MiFi.
Your call I guess- faster data speeds vs less hot device and better battery life.
I just want a device that works and will get me the best buck. I may not buy right away and I took a look at the plans and they are pretty expensive. (i currently pay 50 bucks a month for boost mobile) but I was out and about with my iPad yesterday and kind of wish I had the 3G model. Though this iPad is a gift so I won't complain too much.
You might as well get the Sprint Overdrive if their coverage is good in your city. Both VZW's and Sprint's devices cost $60 a month, connects up to 5 devices and (on 3G) have 5GB caps. The sprint overdrive has the added ability to use 4G for no extra money.
Same here. I use mine everyday while I am at work and never have any problems.
Ditto. It connects my iPod Touch too whilst I'm out walking and don't want to carry my iPad. And it'll connect my MacBook if I need to take that out. It was a no-brainer for me.
I'm considering getting one of those Three sims with 12gb for a year... EBay only I believe? Anyone confirm having had a positive experience of one of those?
Cool. Couldn't see myself doing that, though. Don't have quite the disposable income for my inevitable mistakes.
I would say so, at least speed has never been a problem. I use the MiFi with my MacBook too to play World of Warcraft at lunchtime - that needs a good connection and I am always able to play without any 'lag'.
Mifi isn't big yet in the UK, I would love Vodafone/02 to do it.
I used a Cradlepoint PHS-300 along with a Huawei USB Modem on my recent trip to Germany (before the iPad was released there). Probably not as elegant as a MiFi but it worked fine. Was cheaper than a MiFi as I already had the modem.
I use a Sprint MiFi with my iPad and it works great.
I already had the Mifi so it was an easy decision. Speed is equal to, if not a little better in some areas than what I see on my iPhone. I get about 3.5 hours of battery out of Mifi if I'm doing basic surfing/email/etc. I can also surf without any of the 3G limitations some apps impose. The biggest attraction to me (well before the iPad) is the ability to share the connection and use it with multiple devices. I also use it at home for backup connectivity during the rare times my cable internet goes out.
Needing to carry a second device with the iPad for connectivity is not an issue, both are kept in my messenger bag when I'm outside the house.
I think the MiFi and iPad make a great combo. Let me know if you have any additional questions.

My wife has a Verizon MiFi for her laptop and her iPad. She travels a lot and even when in town is often out of the house. She needed more flexibility than a 3G iPad could provide, so the MiFi is a good choice for her.
I, on the other hand, get by just fine on my 3G iPad. And for the rare occasion when I might need to connect my MacBook someplace I don't have network access otherwise, I've got wifi hotspot software enabled on my rooted Droid

I as well use a mifi, I had the wifi iPad but have since switched to a 3G version with the unlimited plan because of my extensive use of netflix and sling box while traveling. My work pretty much reimburses me for my mifi though so I'm not worried about the added costs. To be honest, if ipad was available in a verizon version, hands down I would get that, using the mifi is just as good as regular wifi, while 3G feels like cellular data.
I use the OverDrive as well. I haven't noticed any heat issues, as was stated earlier, but I can tell you that battery life is kind of low. I used mine during a meeting the other day and went about 4 hours with my MPB and iPad connected. Of course, I then just plugged it into my MBP and used it for the rest of the day, but if you have JUST your iPad with you then that isn't optional.
I use the Sprint Overdrive. The battery life is 3-4 hours streaming a Netflix video nonstop. The unit does get hot, but I would imagine the MiFi would too if it was in use for four straight hours.
When I am in a 4G area, I get an average of 10mbps down. I think I get 6-7mbps up but I am not sure. It is as fast as my home network when browsing, and I have 21 down at home.

Question. I will be traveling to the states for about 10 days in a couple of months. A new Verizon MiFi without contract is around $269.

Bad solution at this point. virgin will be selling them for $149 and then all prepaid foR the data. Probably the same price of their current USB stick plans that are sold at best buy.

I'm using a Verizon MiFi on a (grandfathered) truly unlimited plan. I use it daily with my iPad, iPhone and my MBP, as well as sharing the connection with 3-4 colleagues as well. It works very well.
My setup is similar: CradlePoint PHS-350 + Virgin USB modem on Broadband2Go (pay-as-you-go). Supports up to 5 users. Worked like a charm on our vacation in Maui and non-free WiFi airports. My wife uses it every day on our commute to and from work.
