Might Be Getting a Power Mac G5 but.....

Well i was brousing e-bay and was lookin at fellow forum members picturs, and saw a few G5's they look really nice, and the sexy TFT's they come with, so i thought i would brouse e-bay and have a look thinking there going to cost a bomb, really they don't actually cost that much, im so tempted to get one with net months wages, but i want to know if its worth the £150-£200? im getting a G4 12" iBook for xmas, so will i really need this, its great to have more then 1 system i know, and the iBook is portable this could be a static (aloung with my PC) but what are the pro's and cons, its soooooooooooo tempting lol, HELP!

£200? What sort of PM G5 can you get for £200 on ebay?!

We might not be on the same wavelength but £150 seems way too cheap for a Power Mac G5. Also, the Power Mac doesn't come with a screen ordinarily although of course people on eBay may bundle their Cinema Display together with their G5.

If the iBook is your first Mac, then I'd almost give that a few months usage before buying another one, just to make sure you don't hate it. I don't think you will hate it but play it safe all the same. Not to mention you don't want all your goodies at once.

Considering you'd want to get a dual core or a dual CPU, I don't think they'd be in that price range -- unless it's a scam.

For the single CPU machines -- people will debate that machine vs. the iMac G5.

Well tectincly the iBook is my first mac, altough ive been working on macs at work for a few months (iBooks, Power Books and an eMac) but the iBook will be my first OWN mac, i wan't the power mac to be a static machine with more power then my Ibbok, for when im doing stuff that needs more power, and i will also use it on my network as a 'mini server' until i get the xserve next june, plus my dad liks them, he will be using it alot,

yeah i sore either 2 or 3 go for 'around' £200 i will try find you the links

Yeah, im going to be running my own hosting company dedicated to macs, but its a long way off trying not to think of it yet lol, although its ahrd not o , i was going to get the RAID, but its just to expensive, maybe that will come later if things go well (hopefully)

Guys i send my aplogies, there not £200, im not sure wtf i was on about, i know i sore them cheap anyway, im really sorry, im screwed in the head, you can slap me lol, well despite the price (im annoyed now as i know ive seen one somewere dead and i mean DEAD cheap) but its still looks cheap (compared to the apple site) , are they worth it really as a main PC? because i can try bribe mydad to pay the extra and say 'the whole family can use it and we wont need to run stupid spyware killers everyday;

Well normally I'd say they're overkill for a standard household computer. Considering they don't come with a screen I'd look at an iMac G5 instead, as Sun Baked mentions. What sort of apps will you be using it for?

Hmmmm an overkill by far if so then i think the iMac G5 might be better, and like you've all pointed out it comes with a monitor, and build in iSight etc, hmm will have to compare it, well it will be running the Apple Server software (can't remeber what its called (can't look eoither willt ake to long (on dial up ) its something like scan) and like i mentioned before it will be used as a 'mini server' for around 6 months or so, any more opinions, Power Mac G5 or iMac G5?

You should get a PowerMac (the lowest dual core model) and a 20" ACD or Dell 2005FPW. Perhaps you and your dad can both pay for some? That way it can be everyones but still partly yours. Their great computers, but so are the iBooks. Who knows, you may find your iBook to be powerful enough for you. Mine can do most everything I want it to, with the exception of extremely intense iMovie documents (ones getting over 60GB).

Hmmmm, I really thought my little post was as neutral as possible, certainly not provocative in any way.

Anyway, I was right when I said I thought this thread showed promise. Now a few posts further down the line I must say I have a much clearer idea of what its all about.

About the Xserve - yep, a really great looking machine, especially when its in a proper 19" rack, along with all the other network gear. So thin too, I don't know why they don't make the PowerMacs like that. If you can get one for about £800 thats really good, I'm envious. Certainly a good start for a hosting company, but you'll have to sort out that dial-up connection at some time - maybe upgrade to a T1 or T2. Best of luck.

If you get a used Server for £800 it might need an OS update, the Mac OS X Sever (the server OS upgrade) is £700 -- less if you only want 10 users.

If you don't know anything about the spare parts kit for the servers, you definitely need to research the product.

Since you didn't know what I was talking about, it sounds like you really don't know much about XServes and Mac OS X Server.

A FW Hard Drive may suit your family better.

I would be very cautious buying any PowerMac on eBay especially
when the price seems too good to be true.

Some models are also better left alone where others excell,
so ask before you leap.

If you want a safe bargain, save up and buy a new revision refurb directly from Apple with the full factory warranty and available AppleCare.

It won't take that long for the newest dual core models to show up
on the refurb page.

The Dell 20" Apple 20" and the Dell 24" are all great displays.

Just to add a bit more detail that is because the "seller" is most likely not amjs3. This looks like a hijacked account. It happened to me recently. What happens is that some fraudster is particularly on the lookout for someone who has decent feedback but no recent activity. They crack your password, unless you have one that is too hard to crack, and place fake sales under your name. They usually don't get control of your email, hence the request for buyers to email them on another email address first before placing a bid. The gamble is that on placing the sale, the automatic email notification generated by ebay is not noticed by the real owner of the ebay account, because possibly it is an old hotmail or some such account which is not looked at frequently. In the above case, the sale was shortened to 24 hours to lessen the chances of detection.

I was lucky that I was looking at my email when the fake bids went on, and I even got an email with 3 minutes of the sales going on from somebody who was looking at ebay at the time and thought the sales looked suspicious.

Rule of thumb, where Macs are concerned, there are no real bargains to be had on ebay or anywhere. Basic supply and demand.

I found a similar deal on eBay for a Dual 2 GHz PowerMac with a 23" Cinema Display for a mere $1,000. I e-mailed the guy, and he wanted payment via Western Union for the quickest delivery. He also said he got his machines straight through Europe. Right... I got an alert from eBay right away after I placed a bid. (I wanted to see where the trail led)

The problems with this scam (I really think only one person doing this) are:

- The accounts are stolen and hacked. Got reasonable seller ratings, but it appears like they've been hacked or stolen. Same goes for the e-mail addresses. You see several auctions, similar in wording, but the e-mail addresses are all different. I suspect multiple e-mail accounts or hacked accounts.
- The e-mail addresses on this auctions lead to like 50,000 aliases of probably even more hacked accounts. My first e-mail went to a GMail account, got a reply through AOL, then another reminder came through Hotmail...
- I like how the scammer is spending money to make sure eBay highlights their auction, but not a damn person buys it. I also like how they have the same auctions nearly for verbatim all over the place minus a change in user and e-mail address.

Alas, I continue to wait for a cheap PowerMac G5...

Yeah we can get of dial up after xmas, my mum screwed with the phone so BT thought it would be funny to take broadband of us for a year, what are good internet service providers for T1 and T2?

Ive been looking at 12U racks, but non that look sleek, we have one at work and its v.nice except its a floor standing cabinet, which is 54U i think, so thats far to large
