Hi, I have an emac 700mhz, 40g hd and 640 sdram, the hard drive makes some funny noises. The hard drive can be replaced for around 200 dollars. If I choose to just buy a new imac what improvements will I see. Will safari run faster? I have DSL. I surf the web, email, occasional document. Will Photos take a shorter time to adjust? My other option is to just replace the hd and up the ram to 1 gig. Please tell me what you people think.

Thank You
Damon

Coming from an eMac myself, the difference is quite dramatic on everything you listed. iPhoto is probably 4-5x faster on the Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and even something as simple as web surfing doesn't require near as much effort as the eMac did. Your eMac is probably worth $200 as it is right now, and there's no need to throw any more money at it. The eMac's are great machines, but are looking outdated compared to the newest offerings Apple has right now. Also, if you don't want the 20" screen or don't want to spend alot of $$$, the Apple Refurb site has the previous-gen 17" 2GHz Core 2 Duo iMac selling for $849. I've had mine for two weeks and it has been amazing. Upgraded RAM to 3GB, and it flies! However if you want to upgrade your eMac, the best would max out the RAM and upgrade the HD. Most of the base model eMac's came with 5400rpm HD's (mine did) and a new HD can make a difference, along with RAM.

Sure an new iMac will be faster in almost all aspects (provided the software you're using is a Universal Binary). The base iMac is a pretty good deal for what is it in my opinion. However, it sounds like you're perfectly happy with your eMac as it is. Do you crave more speed when working on photos? If it were me (and I could afford it) I'd take the opportunity and upgrade to a new or even a used iMac.
