Migrating between 10.4 and MBA?

Hey guys,

I have a Powerbook G4 with 10.4. How do I migrate between it and the Macbook Air with Migration Assistant? The 10.4 Migration Assistant doesn't have the "to another mac" option, like the Macbook Air does.

Macbook Air comes with a install disc which contains a new version of "Migration Assistant" which you should install on the PowerBook. After doing so, you'll see the options you require.

That being said...

I did all of the above and have yet to get Migration to actually occur. (Migration Assistant on the PowerBook gets to the "looking for other computers" prompt, but never finds the Macbook Air -- and three minutes later, the MBA "times out.")

Have spent 2 1/2 hours with Apple Techs (1st and 2nd level) -- but so far to no luck. Hopefully, you'll fare better.

That issue seems to be the same as a customer of ours. He bought an iMac 20" and wanted to run the migration assistant with his iBook and it said the exact same message as yours and never finds it. The only solution is to daisy chain the machine through an external drive. It will work 100%.

Please let me know how this goes.

I gave up on the migration. I plan on just daisy-chaining the computers with an external drive, as you suggested.

Apple really needs to streamline this thing.

I was able to migrate from my macbook (10.4.x) to my macbook air.
First I did a fresh install of 10.5 on my macbook air to save some space. Then I "fsck -fy" both machines and repaired permissions on both machines. Then I connected both computers to my switch via ethernet and turned off wireless. Made I sure both devices were "on" the network (either reboot or goto network settings and make sure your machine has the correct Ip settings). Installed the correct version of migration assistant on my macbook using the macbook air install #1 disc. ran migration assistant on both machines worked as expected after than point. Since it was 2am by this point I went to bed. Awoke in the morning and it worked as expected. There were 3 or 4 file error messages for files that could not be transfered, otherwise everything else went as expected.

FWIW - I also migrated my bootcamp partition from my MBP15" to the macbook air using winclone, that process was not fun and frought with peril. However after a cycles of trail and error it went as expected. Getting the trackpad working on the MBA under XP was a bit tricky, but working fine now.

I made heavy use of a generic memorx $15.00 external USB DVD-RW drive which worked like a champ.
