What’s the best way to migrate my data including music files from my 2018 machine to my new M2 machine?

Thunderbolt cable in theory should be the most efficient, but I gather getting it to actually work has been known to be troublesome. A full time machine backup and restoring from it in migration assistant may be the simplest/fastest.

Do you keep an external backup drive?
Either time machine or perhaps CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper?

Having one will make things EASY.
CCC or SD will be EASIEST.

I believe you can connect both old and new Macs together using a USBc cable, and it may work, but the most reliable way (in my opinion) is by using an external backup drive.

I used an external SSD HD with Time Machine backups from my mid-2018 Macbook Pro and it worked without any issues. Initially told me it was going to take about 6 hours - then it completed the job in about 30 minutes.
