I getting back into the iPad after a several year hiatus. My iPad is still running iOS 8.x. I just bought a current model iPad refurbished with 9.7 inch screen.

I’d like like to backup my apps to iTunes and restore them to my new iPad which is running iOS 11.x. But I’m very hesitant to go this route as it encompasses 3 version jumps if iOS and several iPad generations.

What is the best way to migrate my apps with data?

Meh, backup + restore is fine. Note, iOS 11 required newer version of iTunes which doesn't have app support. When you restore the iPad, you'll get app data but it will download latest version of actual apps from the App Store.

Alternately, if you don't need to restore everything, iCloud backup (whittle down the apps that are backed up) + restore might be cleaner.

Alas, no more support for 32-bit so you might have a few missing apps.

Thanks!

It’s coming back to me. It’s been awhile since I’ve tooled with the iPad, though I’ve continued using an iPhone.

Didn’t realize the current iPad replaced the iPad Air with nearly the same weight. The iPad 3 is much heavier. Not familiar at at with the iPad Pro.

Managed to get the iPad 3 updated iOS 9.x and now updating the apps. Next step is to backup to iTunes again and then restore to the new iPad. Yes I realize some 32 bit apps will be lost. Just wanted to make sure the migration is still possible before continuing.

So I got the new 5th generation iPad restored from the old iPad 3. Surprising how many apps are now defunct after a few years. It’s a real chore reviewing the old apps that didn’t restore.

And the new iPad feels lighter and noticeably smaller. It’s a good compromise being significantly larger than the mini. Easy to thumb type I’m portrait mode.

Now if only I could find a decent case. I have now defunct smart case which I’ll really miss.

In terms of cases any hardback smartcover case will do just fine. Search on Amazon, there are plenty.
