I had a slight annoyance when setting up a new iPad yesterday and would be interested to know if anyone else has encountered this.

For well over five years, I have been using the 2018 model 12.9” iPad Pro which, for me, has been an excellent device (probably the most demanding thing I do is process 60mp photographs in Lightroom). But the screen has been cracked for two or three years and even some basic things are starting to feel a little sluggish, so I thought it was time for an upgrade.

So, the mistake I had made was to upgrade the old iPad to iPadOS 18 (I did that before learning that the update had been pulled for M4s). That worked fine. But my new M4 13” came with 17.7 installed so, when I tried to migrate the old device — both directly and via a Mac backup — it would not do so because of the operating system version mismatch. And, of course, it is not currently possible to update an M4 iPad to 18 because of the ‘bricking’ problem.

The solution for me was to install the 18.1 beta on the new device. That worked fine, and I was then able to restore the backup from the Mac. Please NB. that I am not advocating that anyone else with a new M4 iPad should do this; I am merely saying that this worked for me. There is presumably a non-zero risk that the 18.1 beta could also ‘brick’ an M4 iPad?

Anyone else encounter this problem?

It will only work when both the old and new device are on the same version or the new device is on a newer version...

In the case of iPadOS 18.0 bricking M4 iPad Pro, Apple had to disable the upgrade which what they should have done is to release iPadOS 18.0 as iPadOS 18.1 like what they did skipping iPadOS 16.0 which was never released but only released as iPadOS 16.1 about a month after iOS 16.0 was released...

I had this issue and had to resort to a backup from a couple days earlier. Thankfully not a lot had changed that couldn't catch up, but yeah, bit me when I went to migrate to my new M4.

At least Apple have managed to sort it quickly so those with an m4 iPad can update, oh wait…..
