Just got a new iphone 13 in the mail today... Its been a few years since I had to migrate... what is the best way to migrate and what exactly is migrated... the biggest thing would be setting up the Apple Pay stuff and ensuring my Apple watch syncs to the new phone... if it does... I would imagine a lot of 3rd party services/apps don't migrate over with uid and password though I should have them all in icloud.

Plug in your old phone and turn it on.

Plug in your new phone and have it close to your old phone.

As the new iPhone boots up you’ll be prompted to do a phone to phone migration.

If you don’t want to do it that way, back up your old phone and restore the new phone from that backup. Use either your Mac or iCloud.

I used to make a backup and then set up the new phone from that. However, they've made the migration assistant much more convenient (just keeping the phones near each other).

This is the answer. It took around 15 minutes (my perception) to move from an 8 Plus over to a 13. The migration moves all the settings, too - so your new device will pair with your watch easily. It also automatically downloads all apps that you had installed on the old phone - this app installation takes a while, but ya don't have to app-store them.

Before you do anything, unpair your  Watch from your iPhone, so it creates a backup of your  Watch on your iPhone.

Then follow this video. ?

Once you’ve finished transferring everything, open the Watch app and restore  Watch from previous backup.

is there a significant difference in how long it takes when comparing the backup to iCloud method vs having both phones close to each other?

How fast an iCloud backup or restore can be is mostly related to how fast your internet connection is.
An first iCloud backup or a restore from an iCloud backup can take a very long time - sometimes.

Phone to phone transfer will be faster.
