Migration Assistant Headaches (no firewire)

I am trying to get everything off my Mac Mini to my Mac Pro. One catch: All of my data is on an external hard drive connected via firewire.

I would like to just remove the SSD in my Mac Mini, and clone the firewire drive to an internal drive of the mac pro. Would that work?

I tried migrating files last night via Network (since my external hard drive is connected via Firewire). It didn't work. Not even close. I have about ~3 TB of data I need to move over.

Also, I want some things going to a raid array (pictures), and some things going to a different hard drive (iTunes + movies), so I don't know how the migration assistant would work.

What is the best way to move stuff over?

Do you have to migrate data? Just plug your FW drive into the MP and clone or copy the data to one or more internal MP drives.

Why do you want to use migration assistant for moving data files?

If both the new Mac Pro and old Mini are on the same network you should be able to see the external attached to the mini via Finder. Just copy over by hand.

Alternatively, you can buy a cheap ($40) external enclosure with both USB and Firewire (and eSATA) and move the drive into that enclosure and then plug it into the Mac Pro (and then you have it to use as a spare). I was trying to get the programs off of the SSD. But I guess I will just reinstall all of the programs, and use the firewire drive to hand move the files to internal drives, or clone it like you suggested.
