So far so good.
I cleaned up my files/folders and cleared my Desktop on my MacBook Pro (running 10.15.5) and did a clean Time Machine backup to a USB external SSD. Plugged the USB TM SSD into the new Mac Pro and started it up for the first time. Not sure what version of Catalina came on the new Mac Pro, but it alerted me to download the latest version which I agreed to - took about 30 minutes or so - then it proceeded to migrate all the files from the External SSD.
I went through and launched all my apps to see what survived and it turned out as good as could be expected. All the Adobe CS Apps seemed to launch fine (I have the full Suite) - average launch time was not 6-seconds or less compared to about 40-seconds on my 2012 Mac Pro w/SSDs.
Subscription Apps were a pain (as anticipated) because most of them only allow activation on one or two devices (and I have three now!). So had to deactivate/activate Adobe Creative Cloud apps, Suitcase Fusion, Luminar, etc. - will be playing roulette for a while - apparently some of these software developers really don't want you to have more than two Macs? Normally that would be fine, but during a migration it is a pain. I had planned to keep my 2012 Mac Pro to at least run 32-bit apps, but it may not be practical because of these subscription app license restrictions.
Some things left to do:
Resync some Dropbox folders
Fight with trying to get Capto to install correctly (major pain)
Manually migrate apps/files from my main 2012 Mac Pro still running High Sierra:
- Quickbooks
- Quicken
- MS Office
- Over 100 Dreamweaver Client Website .ste's
- Some 3rd party Photoshop & After Effects Plug-ins
- MAIL boxes from main computer that were not on my laptop - MAIL migrated fine, but my laptop does not have most of my mail set up on it)
Once everything is done (app-wise) I will:
- Connect my (3) NEC 27" Monitors to the W5700X ports (for initial set-up I am just using an old 4th NEC monitor connected to the HDMI port)
- Connect/configure my two Wacom Tablets (keeping fingers crossed)
One thing that I really needed during the initial set-up was an old USB corded Apple mouse since the wireless mouse lost bluetooth during the set-up and left me stranded! Fortunately I kept an old mouse in a drawer.
Now just waiting on all my new drives to come in this week to move all my data over.
