I have a 2015 MacBook Pro running Catalina. Can I use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my internal SSD to an external USB Samsung SSD, then connect that Samsung SSD to the new Mac Pro (when it comes in!) via USB to migrate my apps and settings?

I am assuming that a cloned external SSD would qualify as a "Startup Disk" by Migration Assistant?

(My main computer is a 2012 Mac Pro still on High Sierra and I would still need to manually reinstall several apps (Quickbooks, Quicken, etc.) from there, but I am guessing I might have a better initial transfer experience going from Catalina to Catalina as all the apps on my MacBook should already be compatible?)

New Mac Pro came in yesterday, so will what I initially asked work?

I could either clone my MacBook Pro OR create a Time Machine backup to the Samsung external SSD. Is one method better than the other?

I used an external SSD Drive Time Machine with no issues other than mail settings didn't transfer well and Adobe CC didn't transfer well. I had to do fresh installs of both.
Just my personal experience with 7,1
And since you joined the club, time for you to add 7,1 specs to your signature? :)

Come back and let us know how it went ~
Many others have similar questions on migration.
Thanks!

You're making it harder than it seems. Just use the Migration Assistant and it will transfer everything to your new Mac.

Here are the instructions:

So far so good.

I cleaned up my files/folders and cleared my Desktop on my MacBook Pro (running 10.15.5) and did a clean Time Machine backup to a USB external SSD. Plugged the USB TM SSD into the new Mac Pro and started it up for the first time. Not sure what version of Catalina came on the new Mac Pro, but it alerted me to download the latest version which I agreed to - took about 30 minutes or so - then it proceeded to migrate all the files from the External SSD.

I went through and launched all my apps to see what survived and it turned out as good as could be expected. All the Adobe CS Apps seemed to launch fine (I have the full Suite) - average launch time was not 6-seconds or less compared to about 40-seconds on my 2012 Mac Pro w/SSDs.

Subscription Apps were a pain (as anticipated) because most of them only allow activation on one or two devices (and I have three now!). So had to deactivate/activate Adobe Creative Cloud apps, Suitcase Fusion, Luminar, etc. - will be playing roulette for a while - apparently some of these software developers really don't want you to have more than two Macs? Normally that would be fine, but during a migration it is a pain. I had planned to keep my 2012 Mac Pro to at least run 32-bit apps, but it may not be practical because of these subscription app license restrictions.

Some things left to do:
Resync some Dropbox folders
Fight with trying to get Capto to install correctly (major pain)
Manually migrate apps/files from my main 2012 Mac Pro still running High Sierra:
- Quickbooks
- Quicken
- MS Office
- Over 100 Dreamweaver Client Website .ste's
- Some 3rd party Photoshop & After Effects Plug-ins
- MAIL boxes from main computer that were not on my laptop - MAIL migrated fine, but my laptop does not have most of my mail set up on it)

Once everything is done (app-wise) I will:
- Connect my (3) NEC 27" Monitors to the W5700X ports (for initial set-up I am just using an old 4th NEC monitor connected to the HDMI port)
- Connect/configure my two Wacom Tablets (keeping fingers crossed)

One thing that I really needed during the initial set-up was an old USB corded Apple mouse since the wireless mouse lost bluetooth during the set-up and left me stranded! Fortunately I kept an old mouse in a drawer.

Now just waiting on all my new drives to come in this week to move all my data over.

It only takes 2 minutes to charge the Magic Mouse 2 to last for another 9 hours. :)

The mouse did not lose it's charge during the installer sequence it just lost communication (no cursor response). As soon as the Desktop came up, I noticed Bluetooth was turned off. As soon as I turned Bluetooth on, the mouse came to life.
(I had the keyboard connected via cable to one of the top TB3 ports from the beginning, so it never lost connection).

Interesting experience. I never lost connection. I reinstalled the OS on this Mac Pro 3 times in total as I was trying to migrate it to another Nvme stick. I was using the Trackpad though. Experimenting if I can let go of the mouse altogether.
