I have a 2013 27 inch iMac and a new Macbook Air, I tried to do the migration via bluetooth but after 12 hours it was still spooling, I then got a Thunderbolt 3 cable but didn't realise that it had a hdmi end, so I got a hdmi to usb connector but again after leaving it overnight it still says looking for files and both machines seem to be eternally spooling. I am not experienced with Macs but am I doing something wrong, I utilised the migration assistant and I have 64 gig to transfer. Thanks and please be gentle.

Use an external USB drive.

Get either CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper.
Both are FREE to download and use for 30 days.

Use either CCC or SD to create a cloned backup of your iMac's drive.
then...
Connect the backup to the MacBook Air.

Try setup assistant again (may not work, because you should have done this the first time).

If that doesn't work, you could try Migration Assistant (but your accounts may then be messed/mixed up).
