I have 2 older iMac's (I believe fall 2009 first-gen i7 27 inch iMac, and a fall 2009 Core 2 Duo) that are long in the tooth but will continue to run Yosemite (yeah Apple! I'm holding out for Retina 4k iMacs). My slew of iPad's and iPhone's are all recent.

I'm wondering if Handoff/Continuity will be compatible with older desktops/laptops or if they are dependent on having Bluetooth 4.0 LE etc. I have a bad feeling some of the headlining features won't be running on my machines...
AirDrop likely won't work either.

While I'm at it any chance Apple is doing what they have done on older iOS devices and turning off translucency etc. on older desktop/laptops running Yosemite or do we get the whole deal?

I'm really happy Apple is supporting older machines, but the devil might be in the details...

Thanks!

Yeah i'd like to know this too. I've got a mid-2011 iMac 27" and hand off doesn't appear to work correctly with it.

I presume this is down to it using Bluetooth LTE but i would have thought it could have used networking if both devices were connected to the same network.

Any enlightenment on this would be great :)

Oh. Yeah, BLE... Probably not compatible with anything that doesn't have BLE.

Mid-2011 Macbook Air has bluetooth 4.0 - I haven't had handoff work just yet... guessing user error or bugs.

I think the 2011 iMac should also share the 4.0 spec.

EDIT -

Sorry.. just looked on mac tracker - bizarre. It's only gifted with Bluetooth 2.1+EDR . . .

At least AirDrop works with it.. I figured handoff would work with Airdrop comparable systems..

what kind ?

There is. Just buy a Bluetooth 4.0 adapter. They're like $10-$15 on Amazon.

what kind of Bluetooth 4.0 adaptor? I bought one make by Cirago Bluetooth 4.0 LE USB dongle , It does not work.

Have you ever tried ? If yes, what device makes yours working

i was planning to but with everybody's response saying it don't work unless theres a certain one your using that's working if so could you tell me which adapter your using?

I posted that before seeing the responses from people saying it still wasn't working. Should work in theory, so we'll hold on hope for the final release of Yosemite. If not, someone will surely find a way to make the adapter work. It is too big of a feature to just ignore.

See above.

I was also wondering this, I have a late 2012 iMac (the slim one) and a MacBook Pro 2011.
