Are the mac mini 2.53ghz and the macbook pro 2.53Ghz going to preform, for all intents and purposes, identically? Or is there some other hardware that will let one perform much better than the other?

The MBP ships with more RAM, so that'll be a factor. This may or may not make a huge difference depending on what you're doing.
edit: err, I guess it depends on which MBP you're talking about. The 15" ships with 4 GB, the 13" with 2 GB (same as the Mini).

the main difference is that the MBP has a screen,keyboard and touchpad build in , the mini comes without these things 
That is what I thought and was hoping for. It just seems to me that the mini is not respected for performance, but I don't really hear much about poor mbp performance.
The $1999 15" MBP comes with both the 9400m and 9600m graphics. The mini's only have the 9400m in them. If you compare the cheaper 15" MBP that only has the 9400m in it then it should perform similar to the mini.
That's because the Mini competes in the desktop space, and desktop systems are generally faster. So while the MacBook Pro is a good notebook, the Mini is a slow desktop!
